Intrinsic Motivation is the Engine of Success

Students and adults alike work hard for many reasons. We want academic success. We want more money, or a promotion. We want the recognition of our peers, or supervisors, or teachers. These are all good reasons, yet they have their drawbacks too. Sometimes these rewards aren’t consistently available, or easy to see, or they become boring or stale. These external motivators lack the staying power of intrinsic motivation.

Many of us enjoy our work. We like the challenge, the curiosity and the personal growth that comes with being better at our jobs, or in school.  In fact, all of us find at least some pleasure in our work. This is intrinsic motivation. Research tells us that those who enjoy doing their work the most are the most successful. This should be no surprise. Enjoying what we do is like having an engine inside of us that runs on unlimited fuel. When we are intrinsically motivated, we keep going, even in tough times when those outside motivators, like money or encouragement, lose their force.

Why listening works

The people at Motivate Youth strongly believe that everyone has at least a tiny seed of intrinsic motivation inside them. They just need help finding it and more help growing it. We help grow intrinsic motivation through positive conversation, focusing on the individual autonomy of both adults and students. We don’t do speeches, or lectures. Instead, we ask the right questions, and listen effectively to bring out the best in every teacher and student we work with. Let us show you the power of intrinsic motivation.
